Fall 2020 Whittier in Rome

By Emily Russo, POET Intern

What else could be more fascinating than studying Italian language, art, and literature? Studying it all in the heart of Rome!

During Fall 2020, Whittier College students will have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to study Italian culture first-hand through the exclusive semester abroad program WHITTIER IN ROME

This semester program is led by Whittier College professors Dr. Hunt and Dr. Furman-Adams. Over the course of the semester, students will have the opportunity to partake in field trips to the Roman Colosseum, the Vatican, a multi-day Florence trip, historic museums, ancient ruins, and so much more! All of these field trips are woven into the curriculum of the four classes that the students will take while abroad.

The class offerings include:

Italian Cinema

Italian Art History

Beginning Italian Language

Epic of Rome (Taught by Profs. Hunt and Furman-Adams)

This well-rounded and engaging approach to the study of Italian life and culture is the epitome of a learning experience and fulfills the Whittier College CONN 1 PAIR, CULTURE 5 (EUROPE), CULTURE 7 (LANGUAGE) liberal education requirements. The classes will be taught at the Italiaidea Language School, which is located within walking distance of the Roman Forum and Colosseum!

Program Fees & Financial Aid:

The program fee is similar to the cost of living on campus and students are eligible for their financial aid as normal (including federal, state, and institutional aid)! Students will pay their Whittier tuition and a program fee of $7,500 (or $5,500 with the use of the Global Poet Scholarship). Exclusively for this program, students are eligible to use their Global Poet Scholarship one semester early- at the start of their first sophomore semester and on! What’s included in the program fee? Housing (either with an experienced home-stay family or a student apartment), international health insurance, and planned excursions!

Housing Options:

Each housing option provides a unique Roman experience for students. Through a homestay, students have the opportunity to live in the home of a local Italian family that has years of experience as a host family and is well-known for their hospitality to their student-guests. Single rooms are available in each homestay and a homemade dinner is served by the host family Monday through Thursday every week as well as a breakfast Monday through Friday. Homestays are a wonderful fit for students looking to create a lasting bond of family and friendship long after they leave Italy.

The student apartments are located in the charming, historic neighborhood of Trastevere and will be a walking distance from Italiaidea Language School. These apartments will allow students access to double-occupancy rooms with multiple bathrooms, a full kitchen, and a combination living room and dining area. Students will provide meals for themselves and have the opportunity to find the hidden gems and local delicacies of the Italian markets near their apartment!

Wherever you choose to live, studying Italian literature, art, and language in the heart of Rome with fellow Whittier Poets will be an amazing and unforgettable experience. Rome has lots to offer and Whittier College students have an unparalleled opportunity to participate in this custom-designed program!
